Labels vs Stickers: What's Actually Different

The difference between labels and stickers is mostly about the job, not the build. A label is meant to be read, like a product name, a scent, or a net weight, while a sticker is meant to be seen, kept, and stuck somewhere new.

Both have a printed face, an adhesive, and a backing you peel away. Where they split is purpose, material, and how they are packaged. Here is how to tell which one you need.

Are labels and stickers the same thing?

Physically, they can be. A die-cut vinyl label and a die-cut vinyl sticker can come off the same press and the same cutter. The word you use describes what the piece is for. If it goes on your product to identify it, it is a label. If someone puts it on their water bottle because they like your brand, it is a sticker.

That is why one order can serve both purposes. Plenty of small brands print a logo die-cut that seals the box and also gets tossed in as a freebie.

Material: paper labels vs vinyl stickers

The biggest practical difference shows up in material.

  • Paper is common for labels on dry goods. It is inexpensive and takes ink well, but it scuffs, soaks up oil, and wrinkles when wet.
  • Vinyl is the standard for stickers that live outdoors or get handled a lot. It flexes, resists moisture, and does not tear when you peel it.

Beaver Slaps prints both labels and stickers on 3M IJ40C, a calendered vinyl, sealed with gloss or matte laminate. So when you order a label from us, you are getting sticker-grade durability on your product. That matters on anything that sees a fridge, a bathroom shelf, or a lot of hands. If you want a specialty look, holographic is a separate material, not 3M, and works well for limited drops.

Format: rolls, sheets, and die-cut

This is the other real difference. Labels often ship on rolls for label applicators, or on sheets for desktop printers. Stickers usually come individually cut and stacked.

Beaver Slaps makes labels one way: individual die-cut labels, each cut to shape and peeled one at a time, built in the same die-cut builder as our stickers. If you apply labels by hand, that format works well. If you run an applicator that needs rolls, or you need sheets, ask us before ordering. We will not promise a format we do not make today.

Can you use a sticker as a product label?

Yes, and many small brands do. A laminated vinyl die-cut on a candle jar, a sauce bottle, or a coffee bag works as a label. It holds up better than paper and looks more finished. The things to check are size (measure the flat area of your container) and text size (small type has to stay readable after printing).

What a sticker shop label is not: a certified label. We do not make food-contact or regulatory compliance claims about our material. If your product category has labeling rules, those are on the design, and you should confirm them before you approve your proof.

When does a label need to be different from a sticker?

A few situations call for a true label product rather than a die-cut:

  • You label thousands of units a week and need an applicator.
  • You print variable data like batch codes or dates on demand.
  • You need a full wraparound label that circles an entire bottle.

If that is you, ask us first. For most makers labeling by hand at a kitchen table or a small production room, die-cut vinyl labels are the better product.

Decal, label, sticker: does the word matter?

Only for searching. People say decal for vinyl on cars and windows, label for product identification, and sticker for everything else. We wrote a separate piece on decals vs stickers if you want the long version. When you order, describe where it is going and we will steer you to the right size and finish.

Which one should you order?

If it goes on your product and has to be read, order it as a label: plan your text hierarchy, measure your container, and pick a finish that matches your packaging. If it goes in the bag as a freebie, order it as a sticker and make it something people want on their laptop. If you want both, the same die-cut order can do both jobs.
