To design a product label that stands out, make it answer one question from six feet away: what is this? Brand and product name come first and biggest, everything else comes second, and the shape and finish do the rest of the work on a crowded shelf.
Here is the process we walk small brands through before they upload a label.
What should be the biggest thing on a product label?
Set a clear order of importance and size things to match it:

- First: brand name or logo, or the product name if that is what people search for.
- Second: the variant. Scent, flavor, heat level, color.
- Third: size, details, website, and anything required for your category.
If everything is big, nothing stands out. Most cluttered labels fail because three things are fighting for first place. Pick one.
How do you make a label stand out on a shelf?
Shelves are noisy. Three moves cut through:
- Contrast. Dark type on a light field or light on dark. Mid-tone on mid-tone disappears at a distance.
- Shape. Most shelves are full of rectangles. A die-cut label cut to the outline of your logo or illustration reads as different before anyone reads a word.
- A consistent system. Same layout across every variant, with color changing per flavor or scent. Customers learn your line at a glance and find the one they want.
What size font should be on a product label?
Keep your smallest text at around 6 to 7 point and avoid thin, light font weights at that size. Fine script and hairline fonts look great on screen and fill in or vanish when printed small. Test it: print your design at actual size on paper and read it at arm's length. If you squint, go bigger or cut words.
Leave the story for your website or a card in the box. The label has a few seconds to make its case.
Pick a shape and size that fit the container
Design to the container, not the screen. Measure the flat area, leave a margin, and sketch at that size. A label that crosses a curve or taper will wrinkle. Our guide on choosing a sticker size covers how size reads at a distance, and the same logic applies to labels.
With die-cut labels, avoid very thin points and tiny islands in the outline. Smooth shapes peel easier, apply cleaner, and hold up better when the container gets handled or wet.
Gloss or matte: which finish looks better on a shelf?
Gloss pushes color and catches light, which helps bold, colorful brands. Matte reads natural and premium and cuts glare under store lighting, which suits candles, coffee, and skincare. We offer both laminates over 3M IJ40C vinyl, so you can pick based purely on the look you want. For a limited release, a holographic run (a separate specialty material, not 3M) can make one variant pop.

How do you set up a label file for printing?
- Use vector art (AI, EPS, PDF, SVG) or a high-resolution PNG with a transparent background.
- Design at actual size, at 300 DPI if you are working in pixels.
- Keep text and key details at least 1/8 inch inside the edge so nothing gets clipped at the cut line.
- Convert fonts to outlines if you are sending vector files.

Proof it like a customer
When you upload to the builder, you see a proof with the exact cut line before you pay. Look at it the way a shopper would. Can you tell what the product is in two seconds? Is the variant obvious? Is anything crowding the edge? You approve the proof before anything prints, so take the extra minute.
Also check your category's requirements for things like ingredients, warnings, or net weight. Those rules are yours to confirm. We print what you approve and do not certify labels for compliance.
Design it, then test it
Print a paper mockup, tape it to your container, and set it on a shelf next to competing products. If it wins from six feet, upload it to the die-cut sticker builder. Every label is cut to your shape and peeled one at a time, printed in Knoxville. See all our custom die-cut stickers and labels, or grab a free sample pack to see gloss and matte in hand.
